Rep. Mullin’s Statement on Tragic Half Moon Bay Mass Shooting

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Kevin Mullin (CA-15) issued the following statement regarding the devastating mass shooting that occurred in Half Moon Bay Monday night.

“I’m heartbroken for Half Moon Bay. We’ve never had a mass shooting in San Mateo County, let alone in Half Moon Bay. California has endured three mass shootings in three days. That’s three more mass shootings than any community should ever have to endure. Not to mention that many of these residents were already hurting after the devastating winter storms that hammered much of California,” Mullin said. “Right now, Half Moon Bay and San Mateo County need our support. It’s my job to stand united with our community as they endure unimaginable hardship and mourn the loss of friends and family.”

While the mass shooting took place in Congresswoman Anna Eshoo’s district, Half Moon Bay is part of San Mateo County and borders California’s 15 congressional district. The incident left seven people dead and one injured. The suspect has been apprehended by authorities and no longer poses a threat to the community. Congressman Mullin continues to monitor the situation as more information is made available.

I stand united with Congresswoman Eshoo and our state and local elected officials. What affects one of us in the Bay Area, affects us all. We must do more at the federal level to prevent more tragedy and that’s why I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Assault Weapons Ban and Ethan’s Law. Both passed the House in the 117th Congress with bipartisan support, and will be introduced in the 118th very soon,” Mullin added. But it’s not just about prevention. We must ensure that towns like Half Moon Bay receive the resources they need to address the collective trauma that will permeate the community long after a mass shooting has left the news cycle.
