City Leaders & Rep. Mullin Celebrate $850,000 for Martin Luther King Jr. Center

Rep. Mullin and City of San Mateo Leaders Celebrate King Center Funding

Federal Funds to be Used to Preserve Programs, Enhance Resilience

San Mateo, CA – U.S. Representative Kevin Mullin and City officials came together today to celebrate $850,000 in federal funding for rehabilitation work on the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. With Rep. Mullin’s support, this Community Project Funding was allocated to support the City in engaging the community and developing designs to upgrade the King Center, ensuring that existing recreational and other programs can continue. Additionally, this funding will allow the King Center to serve as a community resiliency center, providing shelter and resources to residents during extreme weather and other emergencies.

Rep. Mullin visited the King Center to announce the award with San Mateo Mayor Lisa Diaz Nash, Councilmembers Amourence Lee and Rich Hedges, City Manager Alex Khojikian and the leaders of the City’s Public Works and Parks and Recreation departments.

“Delivering for my district is my primary goal as a Member of Congress and I am incredibly pleased to bring home $850,000 in federal funding for the City of San Mateo’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center. This community gathering place provides a place for children to go after school, meals for seniors, fitness classes, summer camps and a variety of other resources to the underserved North Central neighborhood and beyond. I advocated for this federal support because it will help fund critical renovations to San Mateo’s beloved community resource,” said U.S. Rep. Kevin Mullin, CA-15.

The King Center has served the needs of North Central San Mateo since opening in 1969. The Center’s accessible, walkable location is particularly important to community members with limited access to transportation, including the more than 1,300 children in the North Central neighborhood.

“The MLK Center is the heart of this neighborhood and community, with recreational and educational services for San Mateans of all ages,” said Mayor Lisa Diaz Nash. “We are grateful to Rep. Mullin for recognizing this and helping us ensure we can continue to provide the services our residents deserve.”

The funding was part of the 2024 federal appropriations bills, through which Rep. Mullin helped secure $14.36 million for 15 community projects in California’s 15th Congressional District.
