Washington, D.C. – Congressman Kevin Mullin (CA-15) issued the following statement in response to the Republicans’ government shutdown:
The federal government has shut down under Republican control of the House, the Senate and the Presidency. Any pain caused by this lapse in critical federal services is placed squarely on President Trump and his disastrously inhumane approach to governing our country.
Along with my Democratic colleagues, I have been in D.C., eager to negotiate a bipartisan budget that puts affordable health care for all Americans first. Republicans abandoned their duties by cancelling votes this week and are hiding from their responsibilities – all because they know their health care cuts are wildly unpopular with everyday Americans. It is shameful that Trump and his extremist Republicans prefer to give tax breaks to billionaires while ballooning the national debt and stripping health care away from millions of Americans.
Republicans’ ugly budget proposal would:
- Take away health care from 15 million people – including nearly 2.4 million Californians and 28,000 people in California’s 15th Congressional District
- Double the cost of annual health insurance premiums for millions of Americans. For example, a 60-year-old couple in CA-15 earning $82,800 a year could see their health insurance costs rise $29,341 annually – a 630% increase.
