Rep. Mullin Introduces Resolution Recognizing “Multiple System Atrophy Awareness Month”

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Kevin Mullin (CA-15) introduced a resolution to recognize “Multiple System Atrophy Awareness Month” and help increase public awareness of this rare, yet often fatal neurodegenerative disorderthat affects an estimated 50,000 people in the United States each year.

“A constituent whose close friend recently passed away from this debilitating disorder contacted my office wanting to help raise awareness about Multiple System Atrophy. As a member of the Rare Disease Caucus, Biomedical Research Caucus, and Personalized Medicine Caucus, advancing medical research has been one of my major priorities,” Mullin said. “I am proud to help advocate for March as “Multiple System Atrophy Awareness Month” so we can raise public awareness of this neurodegenerative disorder, and encourage research to develop therapeutics and a cure.”

The causes of Multiple System Atrophy neurodegenerative disorder are unknown, and it is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s disease or progressive supranuclear palsy. This can delay appropriate care and lead to additionalchallenges for patients and families. At present, there is no known cure or treatment proven to help prevent this disease. Increasing awareness of Multiple System Atrophy can promote sustained investments in research, provide a better understanding of the disorder, improve treatment options for patients, and hopefully facilitate a future cure.
