Today, U.S. Rep. Kevin Mullin joined House Democrats in introducing the Taxpayer Data Protection Act.
This legislation is a direct response to Elon Musk’s shameful invasion of Americans’ privacy. It will stop people with conflicts of interest or without a security clearance from accessing the highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system–which is responsible for Social Security and Medicare benefits.
“I’ve heard from hundreds of my constituents angered by how Elon Musk, an unelected billionaire, gained access to your private social security and Medicare data. People are understandably fearful about what he’ll do with this information.” said Rep. Mullin. “That’s why I joined House Democrats in introducing the Taxpayer Data Protection Act so that Congress can hold the Trump Administration accountable and prevent Musk and his minions from having unprecedent access to the private data of everyday Americans.”
If passed, the Taxpayer Data Protection Act will curb corruption and protect privacy by ensuring that only trusted public servants without conflicts of interest and with appropriate security clearances can access the Treasury Department’s most sensitive systems. The text of the legislation is here.
In addition to joining the Taxpayer Data Protection Act, Rep. Mullin also signed onto a letter to Treasury Secretary Bessent demanding that the Treasury provide information outlining the extent of Elon Musk’s access to personal data and the federal payment system, and requesting a legal justification for this unprecedented level of access.
