“Trump ordered Texas to essentially prevent Republican lawmakers from being voted out of office by gerrymandering district maps heavily in their favor. Republicans have stripped away health care and food assistance from millions of Americans so they could give billionaires tax breaks – it’s shameful and they know their harmful policies are wildly unpopular going into the 2026 election.

As such, California’s leadership has been forced into a mid-decade redistricting process and I stand with Governor Newsom in the fight to protect our democracy against Trump’s authoritarian presidency. Democrats are committed to giving voters the opportunity to counter this move in Texas and restore some balance of power in Washington.

While we must respond to Trump’s Texas power grab, I also strongly support affirming and maintaining the California Citizens Redistricting Commission’s decennial process, which will take place as scheduled following the 2030 Census.

I’m proud of California’s leadership on the issue and believe the nonpartisan Commission to be a national model of how redistricting can be done in a fair way. Republicans have opposed Democratic efforts to bring citizen-led redistricting reforms to the national level, and this will continue to be a priority of mine as Co-chair of the Task Force on Strengthening Democracy.”
