Washington, D.C.- Today, the Supreme Court once again overturned longstanding precedent, this time allowing President Trump to fire leaders of independent federal agencies. Congress deliberately created agencies, such as the Federal Trade Commission, at issue in today’s ruling, to be bipartisan and insulated from political interference. For 91 years, this structure has ensured presidents could not remove agency leaders for political reasons, enabling them to enforce the law independently and serve the public—not any one administration or party. By dismantling this safeguard, Chief Justice Roberts has replaced Congress’s policy judgment with his own, further weakening the checks and balances in our system and eroding the public’s trust in their government. This ruling is a shameful usurpation of power – the very kind our Founders sought to address by establishing a new nation 250 years ago. Thankfully, the Supreme Court does not have the last word on how the American People are governed.
